Research how the current networking protocols can be made more power efficient
Make the students do the research on various IoT network protocols and tooling inclusive performance measurements in various scenarios
Integrate research on low power network protocols in the 4th semester ICT & Technology subject Network Technologies
With the rapid growth of the number of devices interconnected in network and forming various Internet Of Things solutions in different fields like weather, traffic and energy measurements, it becomes more and more important to think about power consumption. In an ideal solution, the frequency of the battery replacements for the IoT devices should be made as low as possible or even unnecessary by using energy harvesters deriving energy from external sources like solar or wind energy. One of the most important factors in energy consumption of IoT solutions is network that interconnects devices (estimation is that network communication takes about 20-30% of the overall energy consumption). In the last years a lot of new networking protocols dealing with better energy efficiency are being designed. In this project we do research and comparison of these protocols based on their efficiency, available tooling and applicability to different scenarios. The field of low power network protocols is very new, so a lot of new trends are expected in the future. This makes it an ideal candidate for integration of research in the ICT & Technology curriculum.
